Frères Engel – A New Generation with Deep Roots

After Hubert and Christian, it’s now Pierre and Jacques who are carrying the torch. These two brothers represent the third generation of a family-run winery founded in 1958, based in the village of Orschwiller in Alsace, right at the foot of the famous Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, along the iconic Alsace Wine Route.

Back in 2013, their parents made a bold move toward a more sustainable future by switching to organic farming. Pierre took over the estate in 2018, followed by Jacques in 2021  two young winemakers (neither of them yet 30) with fresh ideas and a deep respect for nature and tradition.

They grow a wide range of grapes  Auxerrois, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Sylvaner  all rooted in granite soils and cultivated with care, without synthetic products. Everything in the vineyard is done by hand: pruning, working the soils, and of course, harvesting.

In the cellar, they’re committed to making natural wines that reflect their time and place. That means no added yeasts, no added sulfites, no fining or filtering just slow, natural fermentation and minimal intervention to let the grape speak for itself. When they took over the domaine, one of their first moves was to experiment with an orange wine, a must-try in today’s Alsace!

Their wines are aged either in tanks or barrels, depending on the cuvée, always with the goal of preserving the purest expression of the fruit. The result? Characterful, vibrant, and honest wines — just like Pierre and Jacques themselves. They bring youthful energy and creativity while staying deeply connected to the legacy of the generations before them.
