SOMLÓI VÁNDOR WINERY
Nagy-Somló, Hungary
Altitude | 160 – 450 metres
Soil | Volcanic basalt
Approach | Natural, unfiltered low intervention, Organic
On the solitary volcanic hill of Nagy-Somló, Somlói Vándor Winery was founded in 2010 by Tamás Kis, a winemaker driven by curiosity and a deep respect for terroir. The name “Vándor,” meaning wanderer, reflects his philosophy: instead of working a single vineyard, he cultivates around 6 hectares spread across 11 small parcels on all four sides of the mountain. Each slope brings a different expression — cooler, wind-exposed sites with sharp acidity, and sunnier exposures with more generosity — creating wines of remarkable complexity and balance.
Rooted in basalt and volcanic ash, with vineyards ranging from approximately 160 to 430 meters above sea level, Somló’s terroir gives the wines their unmistakable identity: salty, mineral, structured, and full of energy. Tamás farms organically and works with minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the natural character of the grapes and the volcanic soil to speak clearly. His focus is on native Hungarian varieties such as Furmint, Hárslevelű, Juhfark, Kabar, and Kövérszőlő — grapes that are deeply connected to this unique place.
With a production of around 15,000 bottles per year, each wine is crafted with precision and intention, reflecting both the raw power of the volcanic hill and the diversity of its exposures. Somlói Vándor wines are not about easy drinking; they are about depth, texture, and length — wines that evolve in the glass and reward patience. They are, in essence, a pure and honest expression of Somló: wild, mineral, and unforgettable.
