Located in the renowned Villány-Siklós wine region, Wassmann Winery is a pioneering biodynamic estate founded in 1998 by Ralf Wassmann and Susann Hanauer. What began with a small Swabian-style farmhouse and a single Portugieser vineyard has grown into one of the most respected natural wine producers in Hungary while remaining entirely family-run, with every step handled personally by the couple.
The estate is rooted in a warm, southern terroir, with vineyards typically situated between 150 and 300 meters altitude, benefiting from one of Hungary’s sunniest climates. The soils are a mix of limestone, loess, clay, and marl, providing both structure and richness. This combination allows for full ripeness while maintaining balance, especially in red varieties.
Wassmann has been a true pioneer in sustainable viticulture: producing the first certified organic wine in Villány in 2006 and achieving full Demeter biodynamic certification in 2012. In the vineyard, the focus is on living soils, biodiversity, and manual work, while in the cellar the approach is natural and low-intervention.
While experimenting early with styles like Pét-Nat, the core of Wassmann lies in deep, expressive red wines — structured yet elegant, with a strong sense of place. Production remains artisanal, driven by passion, precision, and a clear vision: to craft authentic wines that reflect both the power of Villány and the purity of biodynamic farming.
